Common Conditions

Our Neonatal Specialists are experienced in diagnosing and treating a wide range of neonatal conditions and illnesses, ranging from common health problems to rare complications. Early diagnosis is critical in the wellbeing of your child. Common Neonatal conditions we treat at El Paso Children’s Hospital include:

Birth Defects

Birth defects are common conditions that affect 1 in 33 babies born in the United States every year. These structural changes in a baby’s appearance or natural functions can affect almost any part of the body, and their symptoms can vary from mild to severe. A birth defect is typically discovered within the first year after birth. However, some may be found before or during birth.

Birth Injuries

Labor and delivery are both intense moments in a pregnancy. Birth injury is any harm caused to a baby during birth, usually due to their size, position or the use of forceps or vacuum-assisted delivery techniques. Many newborn babies have swelling or minor bruising after birth, and most injuries go away on their own. In rare cases, however, issues like nerve damage or broken bones may be caused by a difficult birthing process.

Jaundice

Many newborn babies are born with skin or eyes that appear yellow, a common condition called jaundice. The condition occurs when bilirubin, a yellow substance produced when the body breaks down red blood cells, builds up and cannot be processed quickly enough by the liver. For most, jaundice will go away on its own, but some children may require treatment to help lower bilirubin levels. Symptoms of jaundice include babies being fussy, floppy, sleepier than usual or having difficulty feeding.
