Pediatric Neurosurgery Diagnosis & Treatment

El Paso Children's Hospital Neurosciences patient

We’re helping medicine find the path to a tomorrow where no child has to live at less than their full potential due to a serious neurological issue. If you’re looking for an experienced pediatric neurosurgeon in West Texas with the dedication and heart it takes to put your child’s healing first, El Paso Children’s Hospital stands as a beacon of help and hope.

Pediatric neurosurgery focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of problems that can affect the brain, spinal cord and nervous system in infants, children and teens.

Pediatric neurosurgeons are specially trained to care for children’s developing nervous systems, which can be very different from that of adults because the brain, spinal cord and nerves are still growing. Pediatric neurosurgeons are required to complete extensive training beyond medical school, including a residency in general neurosurgery, followed by specific training in pediatric neurosurgery.

Pediatric Neurology

Our pediatric neurologists are trained to treat diseases and conditions of the brain, spinal cord and nerves, including gait imbalance, tingling or numbness, headaches or migraines, vision problems, tremors, memory loss, movement disorders, epilepsy, neuropathy, and seizure disorders.

Common Conditions

Common conditions that a pediatric neurosurgeon might treat include:

Brain & Spinal Cord Tumors

Brain and spinal cord tumors are abnormal growths of cells in the brain or spinal cord. These tumors can be either benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Even if a tumor is benign, however, it can still cause issues if it begins to grow and crowd the space occupied by the spinal cord or brain.

Chiari Malformations

Chiari malformation is a relatively rare condition in which part of the brain (usually the cerebellar tonsils, which are the lower part of the cerebellum) protrudes into the upper spinal canal -- the hollow space inside the spine that protects the spinal cord. The condition usually occurs because the rear part of the skull developed abnormally small while forming in the womb. There are four major types of Chiari malformation, each with varying degrees of severity and symptoms.

Craniosynostosis

Craniosynostosis is a condition in which one or more of the flexible joints between the bones in a baby's skull, called sutures, close too early. By the time a child is two years old, the sutures have usually fused together. But during infancy, they allow the skull to grow quickly as the baby's brain grows. In children with craniosynostosis, one or more of these sutures closes before it should. That can cause a child's skull to become misshapen.
