Healing Helm Project

Healing Helm focuses on the prevention, identification, treatment, and recovery of pediatric traumatic brain injuries by combining outreach, professional and community education, emergency readiness, and digital access.

Healing Helm Project

Improving Pediatric Brain Health

The Healing Helm implemented by El Paso Children’s Hospital ensures that clinical expertise and community partnerships drive the improvement in pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) outcomes across El Paso County and the border region of West Texas and Southern New Mexico. The program will engage schools, healthcare providers, and emergency departments to deliver culturally responsive, evidence-based education and care. El Paso Children’s Hospital has partnered with El Paso Children’s Foundation, Texas Tech El Paso School of Medicine, and University Medical Center.

Key components of Healing Helm include:

  • Community and School Education: Delivering concussion awareness and sports safety programs across all eight El Paso County school districts.
  • Provider Education: Offering CME-accredited lectures, clinical symposiums, and interdisciplinary training sessions to strengthen pediatric TBI care.
  • Emergency Department Optimization: Aligning practices with nationally recognized quality measures to improve early identification and intervention.
  • Digital Access Expansion: Launching online tools and a mobile app prototype to extend education and recovery resources to families and clinicians.
  • Patient Care Navigation: Supporting children and parents with navigator-supported reintegration plans after a TBI, coordinating with teachers, school nurses, and caregivers to ensure safe return to academics and continuity of care between hospital and school settings.
