At El Paso Children’s Hospital Emergency Department, our team is specially trained to treat the full spectrum of pediatric emergencies from newborn concerns to young adult conditions. We are here 24/7 to deliver compassionate, specialized care when families need it most.

Just like an adult emergency room, a pediatric emergency department is designed to provide rapid, accurate, and often life-saving evaluation, stabilization, and treatment. At El Paso Children’s Hospital, we specialize in urgent medical conditions affecting infants, children, adolescents, and young adults up to 21 years of age. These include accidental injuries, infections, and complications from chronic illnesses that require immediate attention.

Our pediatric emergency physicians treat a wide range of conditions, from physical trauma such as falls and motor vehicle accidents to severe symptoms like high fever, abdominal pain, or breathing difficulties. We also care for patients with complex or chronic medical conditions, with the support ofpediatric subspecialists available around the clock.

What sets our emergency department apart from general ERs is our exclusive focus on pediatric care and our 24/7 access to board-certified pediatric specialists. This ensures that every child receives expert, developmentally appropriate care without delay.

Our staff is specially trained in both the medical and emotional needs of children and young adults. We understand that emergencies can be overwhelming for families, which is why we prioritize clear communication, compassionate support, and a calm, child-friendly environment. At El Paso Children’s Hospital, we are committed to delivering expert, family-centered emergency care—because every child deserves the best when it matters most.

Common Conditions Treated in the Pediatric Emergency Department

The Emergency Department at El Paso Children’s Hospital is specially equipped to care for infants, children, adolescents, and young adults up to 21 years of age. Our team is trained in the rapid evaluation and treatment of a wide range of urgent medical needs. Below are some of the most common reasons families seek emergency care for their child:

Respiratory Issues

Trouble breathing can quickly become life-threatening in children. We treat severe asthma attacks, respiratory infections with high fever, choking, and cyanosis (pale or bluish lips or skin). Early intervention is critical. Our emergency team coordinates closely with pediatric respiratory therapists to stabilize breathing and prevent further complications.

Traumatic Injuries

Children often visit the ER for injuries caused by sudden impact, such as falls, motor vehicle accidents, or sports-related trauma. Common injuries include broken bones, dislocated joints, deep cuts needing stitches, burns, head injuries, and internal trauma. We partner with expert pediatric radiologists and surgeons to provide rapid, accurate diagnosis and treatment in a safe, child-focused setting.

Gastrointestinal (GI) Issues

GI emergencies can cause significant discomfortand may include persistent vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, dehydration, or ingestion of foreign objects. Our pediatric team delivers timely care with support from pediatric gastroenterologists as needed for follow-up or complex cases.
