Emergency Department

Children often lead energetic, active lives. But when good times go bad, that can lead to a wide range of medical emergencies that need urgent diagnosis and care.

Emergency Department

What is Pediatric Emergency Room Care?

The Emergency Department at El Paso Children’s Hospital is a specialized unit that offers 24/7 emergency medical care for infants, children and young adults, from birth to 21 years old, in the greater El Paso area.

Like an adult ER, a pediatric emergency room aims to provide fast, accurate, often life-saving evaluation, stabilization and treatment for accidental injuries, infections and other urgent medical issues that are too serious or dangerous to wait for an appointment with the child’s regular pediatrician. Pediatric ER doctors often see children soon after physical trauma like falls or vehicle accidents, or when an issue like a fever, chronic illness or abdominal pain becomes unexpectedly severe.

The staff of the Emergency Department at El Paso Children’s Hospital is specially trained in pediatric care, with the education and experience needed to understand the unique medical and mental health needs of growing children. Because effective emergency care often depends on gathering accurate information about injuries and symptoms quickly, our ER staff is also specially trained to communicate with frightened patients and worried parents who may be frantic to get help for an ill or injured child.

At El Paso Children’s Hospital, our pediatric ER staff understands that children often experience and process medical emergencies much differently than adults. Our staff is skilled at calming parents and children, explaining medical care in a way kids can understand and providing compassionate, age-appropriate treatment and support.
