General Surgery

What is Pediatric General Surgery?

orthopedics patient

As the name suggests, the Pediatric General Surgery Department at El Paso Children’s Hospital handles many of the more common surgical procedures needed to keep kids healthy, from appendectomies to complex repairs after serious traumatic injuries.

At El Paso Children’s Hospital, General Surgery basically acts as “front line” surgical care for the hospital, performing any surgical procedure that doesn’t fall to more specialized departments like Cardiology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics or the Ear, Nose & Throat Clinic. In cases that do require more specialized surgeries, General Surgery often serves as a referral point to help patients and their families access those services.

What Surgical Procedures Does General Surgery at El Paso Children's Hospital perform?

Appendectomy is a very common surgical procedure to remove the appendix, which is a small organ attached to the large intestine. Appendicitis -- infection and flammation of the appendix -- is a very common reason for emergency abdominal surgery in children.

Common Conditions

Hernia Repair

Hernias are abnormal openings in the muscles that allow underlying tissue or organs to bulge through, often resulting in a "lump" that's visible through the skin. Inguinal hernias (in the groin) and umbilical hernias (in the belly button) are both common types of hernia in children.

Cholecystectomy

Cholecystectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the gallbladder, a small organ that stores a digestive fluid called bile.

Splenectomy

Used to treat children with a ruptured spleen, certain bleeding disorders or other conditions, splenectomy is the surgical removal of the spleen, an organ that filters the blood and helps fight infection.
