What is a Pediatric Hospitalist?
Pediatric Hospitalists are pediatricians who specialize in providing care for children while they’re in the hospital. They act as the primary care physician for hospitalized kids, and help coordinate their care across different departments of the hospital. To help patients get the care they need, pediatric hospitalists might collaborate with nurses, surgeons and other specialists in the emergency room, a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), medical imaging services or other departments.
In addition to coordinating care for hospitalized children, pediatric hospitalists often use their broad knowledge of the hospital, its staff and equipment to play a crucial role in medical resident and nurse training, efforts to improve patient care or staff safety, ongoing research and, in some cases, the administration of the hospital.
