What Are Pediatric Infectious Diseases?
Pediatric infectious diseases are illnesses in children, adolescents and teenagers that are caused by microorganisms that can spread from person to person, including bacteria, viruses, fungal infections or parasites. Depending on the cause, infectious diseases can range from relatively mild conditions like a cold or flu to severe and potentially life-threatening diseases like meningitis.
Our Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialists received extensive training beyond their medical degree that helps them diagnose and treat infectious diseases in children. Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialists are also highly trained in preventative measures and utilizing personal protective equipment (PPE), to prevent spreading infectious diseases from one child to another during evaluation or treatment.
At El Paso Children’s Hospital, our General Pediatrics Floor includes two isolation rooms, with special equipment and protocols that help our staff safely provide care for children with infectious diseases that require them to be hospitalized.
