What is Pediatric Orthopedic Medicine?

Pediatric orthopedics is a specialized branch of medicine focused on diagnosing and treating injuries, medical conditions, birth defects, and other issues that affect the strength and function of child’s bones, joints, and muscles from birth through age 18.

Pediatric orthopedic specialists are medical doctors with advanced training in the unique needs of a child’s growing musculoskeletal system. They are experts in identifying and treating injuries and conditions that impact bone, muscle, and joint function using age-appropriate treatment options.

In addition to graduating from medical school, pediatric orthopedic specialists complete a residency in orthopedics or orthopedic surgery, followed by a fellowship specifically in pediatric orthopedics.

Common Conditions

Common conditions treated by Pediatric Orthopedics at El Paso Children’s include:

Brachial Plexus Injuries

The brachial plexus is a network of nerves located in the upper back and shoulder. These nerves control movement and sensation in the arms. Each side of the body has its own brachial plexus. In some cases—such as during a difficult or breech birth—the brachial plexus can be overstretched, which can lead to weakness, limited movement, or even partial or complete paralysis in one arm or hand.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves abnormally to the side. It is often diagnosed during early adolescence. Symptoms may include back pain, uneven shoulders, one side of the rib cage sticking out further than the other, and in some cases, weakness or numbness in the legs.

Spina Bifida

Spina bifida is a birth defect that occurs when the neural tube—the structure that forms early in an embryo and eventually becomes the spinal cord and brain—does not close completely during pregnancy. In severe cases, this can result in a gap in a vertebra, with the spinal cord and the membranes that protect it (the meninges) protruding through an opening in a newborn’s back. This exposure can damage the spinal cord and nerves, leading to a range of physical and intellectual disabilities.
