What is Pediatric Orthopedic Medicine?

Pediatric orthopedics is a branch of medicine that diagnoses and treats injuries, medical conditions, birth defects and other issues that can affect the function and strength of the bones, joints and muscles in children from birth to age 18.

Pediatric Orthopedic Specialists are medical doctors with years of specialized training in the proper function of childrens’ growing musculoskeletal system, the injuries and conditions that can impair the function of the muscles, joints and bones and the best and most effective treatment options for those issues.

In addition to graduating from medical school, pediatric orthopedists usually complete a long residency in orthopedics or orthopedic surgery, as well as additional training in pediatric orthopedics.

Common Conditions

The multidisciplinary Pediatric Orthopedics Team at El Paso Children's Hospital treats a wide range of issues that can affect the bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints in children from birth to 18 years old. Common conditions treated by Pediatric Orthopedics at El Paso Children’s include:

Brachial Plexus Injuries

The brachial plexus is a dense bundle of nerves in the upper back and shoulder that's responsible for sending the nerve signals that create sensation and movement in one arm. There's one brachial plexus on each side of the body. If a child's head is bent too far to one side, such as during a difficult or breech birth, the brachial plexus can be overstretched, which can cause partial or complete paralysis in one arm or hand.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine develops an abnormal sideways curve. Often diagnosed during early puberty, symptoms of scoliosis in adolescents may include back pain, uneven shoulders, one side of the rib cage sticking out further than the other and weakness or numbness in the legs.

Spina Bifida

This is a birth defect that occurs when the neural tube, the structure in an embryo that eventually becomes the spinal cord and brain, doesn't close completely during pregnancy. In severe cases, that can result in a gap in a vertebra, with the spinal cord and the membranes that protect it (the meninges) protruding through an opening in a newborn's back. That can damage the spinal cord and nerves, leading to a range of physical and intellectual disabilities.
