Radiology and Outpatient Imaging

From minimally-invasive laparoscopic surgery techniques to innovative medicines, modern pediatrics can do more to keep kids healthy today than at any time in human history. The foundation of that incredible, live-saving revolution is next-generation radiology and imaging.

Radiology and Outpatient Imaging

At El Paso Children’s Hospital, we’re all about helping kids be as strong as they can be. That starts with our commitment to finding and utilizing the latest, safest and most effective imaging options. Our pediatric imaging team is proud to include the only board-certified pediatric radiologists in El Paso. They wield an array of technologies, with equipment designed specifically for pediatrics.

What is Pediatric Radiology and Outpatient Imaging?

Pediatric radiology is a medical field that utilizes a variety of imaging techniques to create detailed images of tissues, structures, organs and more inside children’s bodies. These images can then be used to help diagnose and steer the treatment plan toward the best and most effective options. At El Paso Children’s Hospital, these services are provided by our Radiology and Outpatient Imaging Team, which includes the only board-certified pediatric radiologists in El Paso.

Unlike a general radiologist, pediatric radiologists are specifically trained to create diagnostic images for patients under the age of 18. Their training includes education about the physical development of children, and their changing anatomy as they grow. That allows them to adapt imaging techniques to keep children safe during imaging, get the clearest images possible and make sure kids are relaxed and comfortable while images are being captured.

Outpatient imaging refers to diagnostic imaging procedures performed in an outpatient center. Part of El Paso Children’s Hospital, our outpatient center is a convenient, fully-equipped hub for cutting-edge pediatric medical imaging in El Paso. Our outpatient team has been trained in both the latest imaging technologies and the most effective techniques for calming anxious children of all ages before and during a medical imaging procedure.

Commonly Used Pediatric Imaging Technologies

A computed tomography scan, often called a CT scan, is a type of medical imaging that uses X-rays and sophisticated computer algorithms to create three-dimensional images of tissues inside the body. Pediatric CT scan images, like all CT scans, are very detailed and three dimensional, creating a digital representation of the area of the body scanned. Once created, these models help doctors diagnose problems in several ways, including seeing organs, bones or soft tissues in cross-section, or rotated so they can be looked at from another direction. That can make them crucial to planning procedures, pinpointing problems and more.
